Attempts to build mobile phones were made in the fifties. The first market mobile phone model Motorola DynaTAC was introduced in 1973.
In the eighties in the U.S. analog mobile phones were spread, but they were quite big and expensive. Real revolution took place during the 90th. Digitization and miniaturization enabled sending SMS and MMS messages, surfing the Internet, playing and recording music and nice-sounding ringtones and even videos. Currently, almost every mobile phone has a better and better games and programs (mostly in Java), which can be downloaded from the Internet and uploaded from a computer using an USB cable.
3GPP consortium sets mobile standards. The most popular data transfer systems, now even third-generation, are:
- GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications),
- DCS Digital Communication System) also known as GSM 1800,
- PCS (Personal Communications Service) or GSM 1900 MHz,
- UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications).
The largest producers of mobile phones are Nokia, LG, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Siemens. We should not forget about advanced devices called smartphones, like Apple's iPhone. They are multi-purpose mini computers with large capabilities, own operating system (usually Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile).
