Sometimes when you download files from the Internet, burn them on CD or DVD, and even copy to an USB flash drive, errors may occur. If only 1 bit is changed then the entire file may become unusable. It will not be opened or it will run incorrectly and you will even not know why. Sometimes a file is changed, for example, by a virus infection.

Fortunately you can check so called checksum (or hash sum). This allows you to make sure that your files have been downloaded or stored correctly.
Checksum is a unique number calculated using a special algorithm. Any smallest difference in the file and the sum also changes. It is very difficult to falsify a long checksum - make a few changes to the file and leave the same checksum. This allows you to check the integrity of your data.
AbleSearch Manager allows easy calculating and checking of checksums for files on your computer. Just click the
button.
button.
You can calculate the sum for a single file or for all files in selected folder and in the sub-folders. There are many different algorithms to count checksums. AbleSearch Manager provides the most popular of them: - CRC 32 bit - now rarely used because it is a bit outdated and less tolerant for errors,
- Haval 256 bit,
- MD4 128 bit,
- MD5 128 bit - the most popular checksum often used to verify the data,
- RipeMD-128 128 bit,
- RipeMD-160 160 bit,
- SHA1 160 bit - this algorithm was popular, but now is leaved because of some discovered defects,
- SHA256 256 bit,
- SHA384 384 bit,
- SHA512 512 bit - newer and much safer versions of SHA algorithm,
- Tiger 192 bit.

To calculate checksums, click
Start. Results appears at the bottom - you can save them to disk with
button. It is best to put the results in the same folder with the files, for which you calculated sums. This will make easier to verify the checksum later.

button. It is best to put the results in the same folder with the files, for which you calculated sums. This will make easier to verify the checksum later. To create a standard file with the MD5 sums, select the options:
Add asterisk (*) to filenames - at the beginning of a file name an asterisk is added, e.g. * file1.zip
Checksum before filename - in each line the sum is first, followed by the file name.
Many websites offer checksums (usually MD5) in addition to downloadable files. Thanks to them, you can check if a file is properly downloaded and if it has not been infected by a virus.
On the Verify tab, you can check for example, if files on a CD, DVD or pen drive have been recorded correctly.

Select a text file with the checksum (saved previously) and a folder with files to check. You can select Show errors only to not display information when a file has correct checksum.
When you click
Start results will appear below. If errors are detected in ZIP archives, you can try to fix them. Other files with errors, unfortunately should be downloaded or stored again.
